Beazer Homes USA, Inc.: A Little History
Brian Beazer established Beazer Homes USA, Inc. in 1985 when he acquired Cohn Communities, once a well-known home builder based in Atlanta, Georgia. However, the story behind the company is as beautiful as the homebuilder itself. It all started with an avid English builder called George Beazer in the 1600s.
George Beazer arrived in Marshfield, England in 1696 and founded a home-building trade in the area. However, it was not until 1890 that the family business completed its first home which was sold for 120 British Pounds, a no mean feat in the 1800s.
In the 1930s, the family company started building homes and home communities year-in-year-out. The founder of what’s now Beazer Homes USA, Inc., Brian Beazer, made a foray into the family trade as a trainee in 1960 as the company began to thrive. And in 1980, Beazer family construction company reached a huge milestone: it built an incredible 8,000 homes.
The company moved to the US in 1985/1986, acquired Cohn Communities, and expanded fast throughout the country. Later on, Beazer Homes bought a slew of other home construction companies, including:
• Gifford-Hill, a building materials supplier in 1986
• Koppers in 1988
• Some assets of Calton Homes of Florida in 1997
• Crossman Communities in 2002
Beazer Homes went public in 1994 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. By then, Beazer Homes had gone through 9 generations, but the name continues to inspire quality, unsurpassed innovation, and world-class craftsmanship.
