Meritage Homes: the Short History
Steven Hilton and William Cleverly founded Meritage Homes in 1985 as Monterey Homes. The company was established to build luxury custom homes in the lucrative Phoenix-area of Scottsdale, Arizona. It was the only second homebuilder to emerge from the region.
Between 1985 and 1997, the company bought other homebuilders including Legacy Homes and Sterling Homes. In September that year, the name was converted from Monterey Homes to Meritage Homes, just in time for its IPO at the NYSE.
